CAREER AND MONEY
What if you did not have to wait until your sixties to take a real break? A mini retirement is a planned stretch of time away from work to rest, travel, care for yourself, build something new, or figure out what you want next. It is not about quitting life with no plan. It is about making space for a life you actually want to live.
The goal is not to copy somebody online who disappeared to another country for six months. The goal is to build a break that fits your real money, your real responsibilities, and your real peace.
Give Your Break a Purpose and a Price Tag
Start by getting honest about why you want time away. Do you need rest after burnout? More time with family? A chance to test a business idea? A month to travel? Your reason shapes the money plan.
Next, estimate what your life would cost during the break. List housing, food, health care, transportation, debt payments, insurance, and anything else that keeps your life running. Then add a separate amount for the purpose of the break, such as travel, classes, or business tools. This gives your dream a number instead of leaving it as a vibe.
Build Your Mini Retirement Fund
You do not have to save the entire amount overnight. Choose a target date, divide the total by the number of months you have, and set up an automatic transfer to a separate savings account. Give that account a name that reminds you why you are saying no to random spending today.
Look for ways to lower the cost without shrinking the experience. Could you take a shorter break? Stay with family for part of it? Use paid time off first? Negotiate unpaid leave instead of resigning? The Baddie way is making a strategic move, not making a dramatic one.
Protect the Life You Are Coming Back To
Before you step away, make a plan for health insurance, debt payments, emergency savings, and your return to income. Keep a separate emergency cushion so one surprise does not eat your whole break fund. If you have a workplace retirement plan, understand what happens to your contributions and match while you are away.
A mini retirement is not a reward you have to earn after working yourself into the ground. It can be a thoughtful part of your life plan. Start small if you need to. A two week reset can teach you just as much as a two month adventure. Your money should create options, and rest is one of them.
